Dear Altamont Elementary and High School Stakeholders, April 4, 2024, the Utah State Board of Education made the final decision regarding the daily schedule for our Altamont schools. The decision was in favor of moving to a 4-day school week. (The waiver request was approved.) This means that, starting in August, school will begin at 7:45 am and end at 3:15 pm Monday through Thursday. The buses will pick up students at very close to the same time as they do now, and drop them off back home approximately a half hour to forty-five minutes later than they do now. The total amount of riding time (time on the bus) will remain the same because the bus routes will be the same. The schedules of both schools will operate differently. At the elementary, we will still have three recesses per day, but the specific times of when each subject is taught will be altered. At the high school, we will move to a hybrid schedule that is partly based on the block schedule and partly based on a 7-period day. This is to preserve the instructional time of the core subjects of English and Math, while still allowing students some flexibility to explore many areas such as music, art, CTE, etc. Students will not be allowed to miss instruction to travel to sporting events. This is only a brief summary of changes. Schools will communicate other changes in the coming weeks. We are grateful to all who participated in this process. Obviously, we had some in favor of a 4-day week, some in favor of a 5-day week, and some who felt it would be fine either way. Regardless of what your preference was, we respect your input and value your perspectives. School leaders and teachers will take all of the passion, energy, feedback, ideas, and intuitive thinking and roll them together into a strategic plan of improvement going forward. We feel that we can use this process as a great catalyst to help students learn at a higher level. We ask that all of us will now unify together for the sake of our children. We hope that where reconciliation is needed, reconciliation will happen. We envision schools where all children are loved, supported, and taught in a nurturing environment.
